The Therapist’s Couch – Lee Anna Belton

My name is Lee Anna Belton, and welcome to my couch.

I attended a Tamika and Friends (T&F) Girlfriend Retreat in 2007 with a mutual friend of Tamika’s. During the retreat, as T&F discussed HPV and the link it has to cervical cancer, all these emotions started to flood me. For the past five years, I had several abnormal pap smears, and my doctor mentioned HPV, yet never really explained what HPV was; I had a colopscopy, which little information was provided again. I walked away from each gynecological appointment with feelings of being ashamed, dirty, and embarrassed. I never discussed what I was going through with friends or family. I was alone in this battle.

Attending this retreat, I questioned…Did others not get information about HPV and its link to cervical cancer? Did others feel the way that I did? What I can do to help this cause. After the retreat, I went up to Tamika and introduced myself, and asked if could help Tamika and Friends in providing support.

I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in the District of Columbia and a Licensed Graduate Social Worker in The State of Maryland. I received my Bachelors in Social Work from Seton Hall University and my Master’s in Social Work from The University of South Carolina.
