The full name for this virus
is human papillomavirus. (“Papilloma” is pronounced “pap-ah-LO-mah.”) There are over a hundred types of viruses called HPV
. Most HPV types can cause warts, some in the genital area – but do not lead to cervical cancer
. The types of HPV viruses we are concerned with can lead to cervical cancer. These types are called high-risk HPV
