Maribeth
I was first diagnosed with adeno carcinoma in situ of the cervix
in 1991, at the age of 29. My cancer was detected by an annual pap smear with no prior history of abnormalities. I underwent a series of cone biopsies (5 in total) to remove the recurring cancerous cells before having a modified radical hysterectomy
in 2002.
My story is a testimonial to the need for education. When I was first diagnosed, the relationship of HPV
to cervical cancer
was yet unclear. My gynecological oncologist—one of the best in the field—told me there was nothing I could do to help my body fight the cancerous cells from recurring. Knowing there had to be something I could do, I began an intensive search for information (pre Internet!). I had conversations with the American Cancer Society, the National Cancer Institute, NIH Center for Alternative Medicine--anyone who I thought could help me help my body fight the cancerous cells. That journey led me to Dr. Keith Block, who put me on a macrobiotic diet to help my body’s resilience. While on the macrobiotic diet I had no recurrences for 6 years.
Now, of course, we know so much more and there is something that we can do. My cancer is now 100% preventable. I proudly tell my story as often as possible to help educate young women and health care professionals (and anyone else who will listen!) about cervical cancer, and about HPV. Together we can prevent cervical cancer.
